Speaker's biographies

Henk Alkemade is CARARE's Deputy Operations Manager. Henk graduated in Physical Geography, but worked in IT (development, management) until 2016. From 2016 to 2022 Henk was senior employee of the department of Historical Landscapes at the Dutch National Heritage Agency. He is active at and across the boundaries of IT and Archaeology, (pre-)historic Landscapes and built Monuments at the Dutch National Heritage Agency. Serving as a linking pin between these knowledge departments and IT and participating in national and international projects, concerned with digital heritage. Henk has a special interest in the role of cultural heritage and cultural historic knowledge in addressing present problems like soil subsidence, sea level rise, water management etc.

Catherine Anne Cassidy is the Digital Skills Officer at CARARE, working to develop sector training to support CARARE in its roles in the 4CH project and the European data space for cultural heritage (Europeana). Catherine holds a PhD in Computer Science and a MLitt in Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of St Andrews, where she also is part of the research group Open Virtual Worlds investigating digital heritage engagement and evaluating impact. Her area of research explores strategies for democratised preservation and promotion of threatened heritage using 3D digitisation through community engagement.

Valentine Charles is Data Services Manager at the Europeana Foundation. Valentine has worked with Europeana since 2009 covering the field of data aggregation and quality. She supported the development and adoption of the Europeana Data Model (EDM) before coordinating the development of Metis, the data aggregation and publication infrastructure used at Europeana. Anthony Corns is the Technology Manager for the Discovery Programme responsible for applied technology research, including: project management, 3D data capture (aerial lidar, terrestrial scanning, close range scanning, SfM), GIS for cultural heritage, dataset management and archiving, metadata, promotion and dissemination of the use of technology within cultural heritage. Anthony is currently the Discovery Programme Project manager for CHERISH and the ESFRI E-RIHS (European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science) project and is chairman of the CARARE (Connecting Archaeology and Architecture to Europe) association.  Anthony has participated in several EU funded projects including: 3D-ICONS (CIP), ARIADNE (FP7), LoCloud (CIP) and ArchaeoLandscapes Europe (Culture 2007-2013) and is a member of the Europeana task force for 3D data. He graduated in Geology & Physical Geography BSc (Hons.) and MSc in GIS from The University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1997 and 1999 respectively.

Anna Danylchuk is head of the Volyn Foundation, a PhD, associate professor of Applied Linguistics at the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University; author of the Daily Ukrainian Newspaper "The Day"; expert of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (Ministry of Culture and Informational Policy of Ukraine); and since recently an active Youtuber as @AnnafromUkraine where Anna posts vlogs with real-life, human stories from Ukraine and videos about Ukrainian culture and history.

The Volyn Foundation is a non-governmental organization based in Lutsk (Ukraine) which was founded in 2017 for the purpose of preservation and promotion of historical and cultural heritage, local tourism, environmental protection and natural reserve fund, education and cultural cooperation. The Foundation has implemented a number of cross-sectoral cultural projects, including: tourist routes that combine historical and cultural locations and places of the natural reserve fund; tourist competitions; digitization of cultural heritage objects; artistic and literary presentations; it hosts podcasts about culture, creative industries and preservation of historical and architectural heritage. The Foundation's mission is to preserve and popularize the historical, cultural and natural heritage of Volyn and Ukraine, promote its organic entry into the European cultural space, introduce innovations and stimulate cross-sectoral, international cooperation in the field of culture, ecology and tourism.

Anna is coordinator of the Digital Transformation for Cultural Heritage Capacity Building in Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine project. Within the project, supported by the Creative Europe programme, cultural heritage material, such as sites and buildings connected with the historical figure of Vytautas the Great will be digitised using innovative 3D and Augmented Reality technologies. Tthe selected objects are located in three different countries – Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania, but are united by common historical background and cultural practices. See more here:

Ivan Erhel is a TV documentary film director and producer, and a heritage activist who collaborates with museums and scientific institutions. After he made Treasures of Mesopotamia, where he follows an Iraqi writer trying to digitize the heritage endangered by Isis, he decided to go further and to help the Iraqis to preserve themselves their own heritage, and to remind the world that Iraq is not just a conflict zone, but the cradle of civilization. Ivan is coordinator of Tech4Heritage an inclusive Iraqi/European initiative to train people to 3D digitisation of the Cultural Heritage in the Nassiriyah, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul and Sulaimaniyeh regions of Iraq. https://pro.europeana.eu/person/ivan-erhel

Kate Fernie is Operations Manager at CARARE. Her background is in Archaeology and Museums with experience of digital libraries, digital preservation and the online cultural heritage. She is currently operations manager for the CARARE Association. Kate has been involved projects developing content for Europeana (CARARE, Europeana Archaeology, Share3D, LoCloud and 3D-ICONS); developing best practices and capacity building (4CH, ARIADNEplus, Tech4Heritage); and technologies for curators, researchers and users (PATHs and LoCloud). Kate led the Europeana Network Association’s 3D content task force and is interested in how 3D technology is bringing new opportunities for the cultural heritage sector to provide access to heritage.

Karina Rodriguez Echavarria is a Reader at the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering at the University of Brighton and Director for the Research Centre for Secure, Intelligent and Usable Systems. Karina leads the Digital Skills in Visual and Material Culture project which is establishing a community of practice to support researchers and practitioners, and their organisations, to develop skills in creating, managing, using and sharing data. The project is developing a skills gap analysis tool, training opportunities and learning resources, experience-based learning opportunities within cultural heritage organisations, identifying infrastructure and sign-posting research.

Alberto Sánchez Vizcaíno is an Associate Professor of Prehistory, and deputy director of the University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology, University of Jaén, Spain. His expertise includes Iberian Archaeology and physical-chemical analysis of archaeological materials. He has participated in several EU projects for the University including CARARE, 3D-ICONS and CEMEC. He is currently member of the board of the CARARE association.

Henning Schulz is leading the Data Publishing Services team at the Europeana Foundation. This team is managing and developing the relationship with Europeana's data partners to build the best trusted repository of cultural data in Europe. Henning is palaeontologist by education and worked ten years for the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin as a curator and researcher. It was at this time when he entered the Europeana ecosystem as the coordinator of the EU funded project Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe). Before joining the Europeana Foundation in 2012, he was closely collaborating with Europeana in other ways, e.g. as the Secretary of the Europeana Network and member of the Europeana Foundation Board.

Sebastiaan ter Burg is Knowledge Development Specialist at Europeana Foundation. Sebastiaan works in Digital Capacity Building, developing and facilitating workshops, developing training materials and creating content about Europeana projects. He has a background in business administration management and content production, working freelance as a workshop designer, facilitator, videographer and photographer for Europeana before joining the organisation in 2020. As a content maker, Sebastiaan has worked with and for numerous Dutch museums, archives and library organisations.
