We are looking for an experienced Metadata Officer to join our team. Your main task will be to work closely with organisations from across Europe to enable aggregation of their content to the common European data space for cultural heritage and the Europeana website.

The successful candidate will have experience of working in cross-sector projects, a strong background in metadata standards and working with structured data, experience of copyright and licencing of digital media, and with 3D content. Experience of participating in projects and of international working, knowledge of the digital archaeological and architectural heritage, and familiarity with the Europeana Data Model (EDM) will be advantageous.

Location: Home office / Remote working

Position type: Part time up to 60 hours per month

Fixed term contract to 31st August 2026 with the possibility of extension

Rate: 20-30 euros per hour according to experience (32,200-48,300 euros pa pro rata)

The position may be filled either through a secondment or via a self-employment contract.

Core responsibilities

You will report to CARARE’s Operations manager and will be working to support the delivery of content and metadata for aggregation to the Data Space. You will be advising CARARE’s members and data partners on content, data, standards, access licences and offering hands-on support with metadata mapping, enrichment and the delivery of metadata for aggregation to the Data Space. The core responsibilities are:

  • Helping CARARE’s members and data partners in sharing their metadata and content with the Data Space by offering practical support and advice on metadata capture, mapping, quality, validation, harvesting and aggregation via CARARE’s tools and services namely: MINT, Repox Flow and the Share3D dashboard.
  • Providing expertise on metadata schemas and data standards, Linked Data and controlled vocabularies, geographic information, content standards and hosting, 3D viewers, copyright and rights labelling, and Data Space frameworks for licencing and publishing.
  • Helping ensure that content and metadata are delivered to the Data Space in a timely and effective way. Addressing metadata and content issues with speed and efficiency.
  • Helping to develop of CARARE’s contribution to the Data Space by identifying new or improved content, potential new data partners and/or linked resources.

General job-related activities

  • Supporting CARARE’s operations manager regarding aggregation.
  • Serving as a primary contact person for data partners and Europeana Foundation’s content ingestion team.
  • Providing regular updates to CARARE’s team on progress with data delivery and related project commitments.
  • Contributing to project reports.
  • Contributing to guidelines about our services for data partners.
  • Communicating CARARE’s aggregation services through the social media.

Knowledge and experience required

  • Experience of working in projects involving organisations from different cultural heritage sectors (historic environment, libraries, museums, archives, archaeological sites, historic buildings).
  • Knowledge and experience of metadata standards, structured data, linked data and metadata aggregation.
  • Broad knowledge of digitisation, data management, metadata standards, copyright and rights licencing, metadata enrichment, AI.
  • Knowledge and experience of 3D content, metadata, paradata and viewers.
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Familiarity with the Europeana Data Model and CARARE’s Data Model will be advantageous.
  • Previous experience of European projects is desirable.
